Finding an Attorney
There are many attorneys that practice in many different areas of law. If you are charged with a crime, you need a criminal attorney, not a personal injury attorney that dabbles in criminal law. You should ask about the background and experience that the attorney may have. How long have they been practicing criminal law? Did they work in the prosecutor’s office before they went into private practice? You need to make sure that your attorney has the necessary experience to handle your case.
You also need to be sure that your attorney is someone that you can work with over the next few months or even a year while your case is litigated. There is no point in having an attorney that doesn’t communicate well with you or listen to your concerns. It is your case and your life could be affected-so make sure that you can work with that person.
The only way to make sure that the attorney is qualified to handle your case and is someone you can work with is to meet with them. At your initial consultation spend some time discussing your case and the attorney’s qualifications.
